Seasonal image and video search engine optimisation can drive xmas sales

As the Christmas shopping rush heats up, any extra traffic you can direct to your web site represents a potential new sale. Using search engine optimisation wisely at this time of year can directly increase your sales figures. One such way to take advantage is to optimise your video and image files. By using familiar SEO techniques in new ways, you’ll see your profile rising on image and video search tabs. As more and more of us go online to search for gift ideas, placing your products in these search tabs can reap dividends.

Here’s how: 1. Write a descriptive, Alt tag for every image on your site. Try including pricing details if you’re particularly competitive or any incentives such as free postage and packaging. You can also use the Alt tag to suggest alternative products or accessories to the main product.

2. If you don’t yet have videos of products, consider bringing in a professional videographer to do them justice. If you can’t afford to hire a video crew and intend to film the products yourself, storyboard the entire thing from start to finish before you begin. This should include a description of each shot, notes on camera angles and any additional equipment or props you may need.

3. Don’t forget to record a voiceover to go with the video. Include product specifications and details of accompanying products or further items in the range. When you have added audio to the image files, write up your notes into a useful transcript to accompany the video on your site. You’ll need to use SEO good practice here such as keyword placement and keyword density.

4. Image and video file names should be keyword rich and descriptive to aid overall site optimization and enable the user to find the image or video easily. Rather than image01 or video01, try “6-speed-mountain-bike.gif” or “mountain-bike-product-demo.wav”.

 5. Add a short text description under each image and video of all products being sold on your site. This will be shown by Google in the image or video search results page, encouraging viewers to click through and begin the sales process.

6. Build links back to your video and increase its online exposure to draw traffic to your site by distributing your new media online. You can find out more about video distribution sites and their role in SEO here.
